Iranian Elections

Amidst rumors that many Iranian websites have been shut down The Eyeranian has a post about the elections today. Apparently Hoder was supposed to stay up all night and monitor and update Iranfilter, but I can't get either to come up. According to an update:

There were no major incidents. The voter turn-out has been light with estimates ranging from 15 to 30 percent of eligible voters participating.

He also says that there have been reports of "cheating." I'm shocked.

Lady Sun has a post today about some reformist newspapers that were shut down.

Radio Farga has a lot of stuff, if you read Farsi.

What comes after a voter boycott, I wonder?

Update: I'm now getting Iranfilter and Hossein Derakhshan (Hoder) to load, but they're veeeeerrrryyy sluggish. It may just be that they're getting a lot more than their normal traffic.

IRNA is putting the total turn-out at around 60%, though I tend to suspect that it's about half of that. The outcome of these elections was already determined before they ever began, the only difference is that now Iran has dropped the veneer of respectability that they possessed before all of this thanks to Khatami.

Be interesting to see how the media is going to portray Iran now that they can't play the reformist/hardliner game anymore ...

I don't know what it means, either. Here's one interpretation, from Saliot on Iranfilter:

My conclusion is that the conservatives supported by the leader will win the elections [now there's a bold prediction], but because of the low participation rate of the people, the true winners are the opposition groups, now that they have become more popular, and especially because the true reformists have quit the government and joined the people.

Almost the entire society is now underground, or in the stratosphere of the internet. My guess is that there's a general recognition that there probably won't be any attempt by the US to support Democracy until after our elections in November. But will this underground society be inclined to wait that long? Also, because the political opposition groups have now been forced underground, the underground itself will become more ogranized.
